As teens, you have probably gone first through the “breakout” phase, and you have pretty much struggled with finding different remedies to make your nasty pimples or acne go away. As adults, regrettably, we find out that we are still fighting against pimples and acne. Yep, many of us know this all too well.

These types of breakouts usually don’t respond very quickly to traditional drying spot treatments. Since chin and jawline breakouts tend to be cystic (bigger blemishes deep under the skin), spot treatments dry out the surface but leave the bump underneath. Sound familiar? Also, since cysts are large and severe, they can last for 1-2 weeks and leave red, dark scars that linger even longer.

If not treated, acne can cause scarring. Scarring is more likely when the skin is inflamed, swollen, reddish and painful, such as cystic acne and nodules. This form of acne penetrates deep into the skin, causing damage. Delaying treatment can cause scarring too.

While acne usually affects teenagers and 20somethings the most, anyone of any age can get acne, even babies. Our instinctual response — picking at it, rubbing it and canceling our social engagements — doesn’t help in the least, but fortunately, there are some treatments available that can.

1) Chalk (any color really, but be prepared to look like a Simpson’s character). Rub it onto the red area and leave as long as you can (I usually leave it for an hour or two once a day). WARNING: do not crush the chalk into a powder. It creates a very fine powder and is really bad to inhale.

There’s nothing more disappointing than waiting until your 20s to finally have clear skin, and then learning the hard way that bad breakouts don’t necessarily end when your teenage years do. Coming to terms with adult acne is difficult—best rest assured, you’re not the only grown woman dealing with zits.

Use this in a cleanser or spot treatment daily on the acne-affected areas of your skin.[6]
