When dealing with chin and jawline acne, there are two goals. First and foremost, you want to prevent breakouts from ever appearing in the first place. Of course, this is easier said than done. However, minimizing the bacteria that are trapped in pores should help significantly.
One last word of advice: apply sunscreen daily. Dr. MacGregor couldn’t stress enough the important role sunscreen plays in reducing marks and scars. “I always suggest using a broad spectrum sunscreen because the spots only get worse if the person is constantly getting sunlight on the skin,” she said.
Anyone who endured puberty knows that acne and hormones have an unfortunate bond. Although your hormones may not be flaring up as much as in middle school, adults continue to be affected by them—which Dr. Day explains is often a main cause for continued breakouts. The double whammy is that skin doesn’t bounce back as quickly as in younger days. “As you get older, the marks tend to last longer and seem more likely to leave scars,” she says. That is why diet and at-home skincare tactics cannot always cure the issue.
Don’t be surprised if the skin sloughing off is not flaky. It will be thicker than flakes, almost like the skin’s outer layer is being peeled off. This is what it means to have a deep peel. Your recovering time will be around 2 weeks.
You might not realize it, but what you’re putting in your hair could be causing back and/or chest acne. In high school, a dermatologist prescribed shampoo and conditioner to me because of my sensitive, acne-prone skin, and it really did work. If you recently switched brands and noticed a change in your skin, that could definitely be the problem. I also find that certain hair products make me break out. Just keep it in mind!
A few other remedies may help you fight pimples naturally, including applying apple cider vinegar to the skin, limiting your dairy intake and reducing stress levels. However, these have little or no research behind them, so more studies are needed.
While the most common lesions of acne include comedones, inflammatory papules and pustules, scarring may be the result of more severe acne involving nodules and cysts. About 30 percent of teenagers have acne that’s considered severe. (3) For some, genetics is the cause and beyond their control. (4)
A report presented by New York University and published in The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that eating high glycemic foods like bakery goods and sweet beverages that are high in sugar content causes pimples (5). Having too many dairy products is also not good for your skin, though they are high in calcium. These pimples can be corrected by following the right diet.
Unwashed sheets and pillowcases lead to cross contamination which leads to pimples. Aim to wash your bedding once or twice a week to prevent bacteria from building up and affecting your complexion, suggests Dr. Papantoniou. If that seems overboard, at least aim to wash your pillowcase once a week since that’s where your face rests while you snooze (and dream of flawless skin).

Harvard shared information regarding isotretinoin, noting that even though the drug shows dramatic results in a short period of time, it’s been shown to “destroy lives.” In fact, Harvard reported that about 25 percent of babies who have been exposed to Accutane while in the womb have serious deformities and develop learning disabilities. Hi, I’m 12 and it is a sunday night… So, before school I had a whole bunch of pimples from forgetting to wash my face after the pool!! I decided to put Noxzema, Apricot Scrub, and Mint Julep on before bed… I WOULD SUGGEST IT! It really helps! Hope I helped 😉
Some people use a washcloth when washing their face, but hands are just as effective, if not less irritating. Take the directed amount of acne wash, mix it with warm water, and gently rub it into your face in a circular motion.
If benzoyl peroxide, retinol, and salicylic acid help a bit but not completely or if you have cystic acne, see your dermatologist. You may need something beyond topical treatments, says Dr. Lee. Here’s the extra oomph that may make a difference.
If you’re wary about trying pure tea tree oil, don’t fret — there are numerous OTC acne products that contain the oil. The Shop, for example, offers numerous spot treatment options including topical oils, gels, and wipes.
If the skin on your butt is rough, don’t forget about exfoliating. Use body scrubs but remember to moisturize afterwards. Over-exfoliating can actually cause acne to get worse, which is the opposite of what you want (of course).
If ITG were to have a mascot, and that mascot was a facialist instead of a cartoon character, I’m relatively certain we would draft Renée Rouleau for the job. Even among the Joelle Ciocco’s and the Isabelle Bellis’ of the world, Renée has cast something of a spell over the whole team since we first discovered her miraculous Anti-Cyst Treatment way back when. Renée, it turned out, didn’t just have great products, she is a veritable tip hotline for problematic skin, too—Tom spent an hour on the phone with her once discovering the difference between AHAs and BHAs. Her specialty is balancing acne-prone skin, with a side of helping everyone discover their own bespoke skincare routine. For this entry in our Facialist series, we asked Renée to focus on just that because, whether you have acne, just occasional breakouts, or a cabinet full of spot treatments you don’t know what to do with, you deserve answers.

Practice smart marketing awareness of natural ingredients: You would not put naturally occurring mercury or poison ivy on your skin, so be cautious of ingredients that are marketed as “natural,” home remedies, or are trademarked. Natural does not equate to safe skin treatment! Do however use ingredients scientifically proven to treat skin.
