Luckily, there’s a dermatologist who’s garnered quite the acne-obsessed cult following: Sandra Lee, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Southern California—aka Dr. Pimple Popper. Her YouTube channel is crazy popular, recently logging its billionth view. In her videos, not only does she educate people on what acne is, but she features footage of all sorts of skin issues erupting, including blackheads, pustules, cysts, and more. (There’s a “graphic and shocking” warning that precedes her videos—fair warning!)

What comes before the pimples even head to the surface of your skin? Though most people tend to get acne in their teens, women are more likely to suffer throughout their lives. “Acne is predominantly hormone-driven. Because of hormone fluctuations throughout your cycle, you may break out around your period or during ovulation,” Dr. Lee explains. There are also genetic components that drive how likely you are to get acne, like how oily your skin is naturally.
If saving babysitting money for a year still won’t make a dent in the funds you need to get a fancy laser treatment that will blast away acne scars, don’t be discouraged. Thanks to the geniuses behind one of our favorite drugstore brands, La Roche-Posay, there’s a new class of products that feature smart technology and better-than-ever ingredients to help treat dark marks and acne scars — at an affordable price. “La-Roche Posay’s Pigmentclar line is unique in the way it combines exfoliating lipohydroxy acid (LHA), phe-resorcinol, and ferulic acid, which are both strong brightening ingredients, all together to form a topical product that’s seriously effective,” says dermatologist Dr. Mona Gohara.
“Benzoyl peroxide destroys the acne-causing bacteria that’s trapped within the follicle, causing inflammation,” says Zeichner. To prevent irritation, make sure you prime the skin with a light moisturizer first, then spot-treat the cyst with a super thin — seriously, less is more here — layer of the lowest percentage of benzoyl peroxide. “If any burning or stinging occurs when you apply it, you’ll know it’s too strong and you should wash it off immediately.” Try the Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Vanishing Treatment Cream.
No one dies from acne–so why treat it? “The answer is that it can deeply affect your psyche, behavior, and relationships,” says Dr. Lee. If you’ve been grappling with acne for years, understand that pimples aren’t your fault. There’s at least one silver lining: “Having oily skin means you have built-in moisture, which keeps skin looking younger,” she says. Remember that next time you wake up to a killer zit.
Pore strips, whether purchased over the counter or created at home, use an adhesive to cling to the impurities blocking the pore and ultimately remove the plug. Pore strips do remove pore plugs and dead surface skin cells, but they won’t prevent blackheads from returning. Immediately after using them, your pores will shrink and appear smaller.
Certain antibiotics may cause the breakout of pimples and pustules primarily on the shoulders, but also elsewhere on the trunk and, to a lesser extent, on the face. Penicillin antibiotics are most likely to have this effect, but pustular eruptions on the shoulders can also be caused by the antibiotics doxycyline and co-trimoxazole, which are antibiotics that are sometimes used to treat acne on the face, as well as the drugs chloramphenicol, itraconazole, hydroxychloroquine, mercury, lithium, isoniazid, and olanzapine. This form of acne also usually clears up when the medication causing it is discontinued.
“Vitamin C can help build collagen and promote healing,” says Dr. Shah. “SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic serum is a combination of pure L-ascorbic acid, which is vitamin C and absorbs into the skin so that it continues working even long after it dries.”

Exfoliate regularly. This is very helpful when you want to get rid of dark spots from acne, but you have to know how often you need to exfoliate. For oily skin, you can do it twice a week depending on how oily your skin is. For normal skin, you can do it once a week.
A BHA product often cited includes salicylic acid, it must be between a pH between 3 and 4 to work. A BHA works to slough (to get rid of) off dead skin cells and encourage new skin growth. As a result, you may experience dry skin and scaliness around acne, but this will dissipate over time as your skin begins to regenerate faster. Use this in a cleanser or spot treatment daily on the acne-affected areas of your skin.
Why the chin and jawline area? Most dairy cows are given growth hormones. Therefore, the consumption of milk, cheese, and yogurt influences endogenous hormones. These mimic the hormones that trigger the skin’s oil production, thus starting the acne process. There are more sebaceous glands in the face.
Lemons act as an exfoliant, skin lightener, and disinfectant to reduce the appearance of scars and prevent new pimples from forming. On a clean face, dab acne with a cotton ball or cotton swab dipped in lemon juice, then rinse with cool water.
Since all blemishes are related to bacteria in the pores, you’ll want to prevent any unnecessary bacteria from transferring to the skin. Did you know touching your face all day long, without intentionally doing so, makes your face one of the dirtiest parts of your body? From resting your hand on your chin while sitting at a desk or table to picking your skin while deep in thought, it’s important to keep your hands off this area.
Before bed I apply a baking soda mask on my face (just soda and water made into a thick paste) and keep it on for like half an hour. After washing it off I dab my face with cotton wool soaked in apple cider vinegar (this works as a toner). I keep that on for some time and then finally wash it off just before bed, and apply a light moisturizer while my face is still wet. Cleansing, toning and moisturizing, done!
While honey itself is fine for fighting off pimples and the blind pimples, it becomes even more effective when you use it with apple pulp. Apple contains malic acid which is one of the Alpha hydroxy acids. When you apply alpha hydroxy acids to your skin, it excellently moisturizes and removes dead skin cells. Malic acid is in fact used for treating acne and diminishing acne scars along with firming and smoothing skin. When used for acnes and pimples including those that are under the skin, alpha hydroxy acids act by removing dead skin cells. They are also able to increase the thickness of deeper layers of skin. This firms your skin. Thus, it makes sense to use apple pulp for treating blind pimples too. Add honey to this and make it anti-bacterial too.

Lemon juice is a natural alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that can be used to fade scars, promote healing, and revitalize skin. Simply squeeze the juice from one organic lemon into a small bowl. You can use this treatment undiluted or mixed with water if you have sensitive skin. Dab juice over scars with a cotton ball and let it dry completely. Then rinse your face with cool water and follow up with a natural moisturizer. Repeat this treatment once every two or three days.
Take an extra five minutes before hopping on the treadmill to completely wash your face and remove your makeup to minimize the risk of breakouts. “Sweat is released through visible pores in the skin,” says dermatologist Dr. Janell Vega. “When makeup covers those pores, that barrier doesn’t allow the sweat to make it to the surface of the skin, which can lead to clogged pores. The trapped debris and bacteria are a perfect breeding ground for acne bumps and zits.”
Don’t touch your face. This is incredibly difficult, as people are prone to touching their faces on a regular basis. Be careful about scratching your face, resting your face on your hands, and picking at pimples. Never pop your zits or squeeze at pesky blackheads, as this only introduces more bacteria to your skin and will make your acne worse.
Keep bathwater lukewarm, and limit exposure to 10 minutes or less. Avoid soaps with harsh lathering agents such as sodium lauryl sulfate. Stick to gentle cleansers that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera.
If your skin is very oily, then there’s no better option than exfoliating it. You do it to remove any dead skin cells that may be residing on the dermis, doing nothing but to abet bacterial growth and clog the skin pores. There are a variety of ways to exfoliate your skin, but I’ll outline the best and the simplest ones.
Acne thrives on neglected skin. Many cases of adult acne result from dead skin that clogs pores. That’s why the first line of defense against acne should be good daily cleansing habits. “An ideal daily skincare routine for adults with acne may include a medicated acne wash, glycolic or salicylic exfoliating treatment pads, and a lightweight moisturizer,” says Jeff Birchall, MD, medical director of Dermacare Laser and Skincare Clinic. These are the morning routines of people with great skin.
I not only get folliculitis on my butt, it also occurs on the back of my upper legs. Its so frustrating and embarrassing, it occurs more often when I begin to exercise; i rush home from the gym to shower and change but no luck. The only product that has worked for me is “butt acne clearing lotion” by Green Heart Labs. It has Lactic Acid one of the medication the article recommends. I say give it a try, just remember with any skin product it takes time to work – don’t expect results over night. Good Luck everyone.
Don’t use toothpaste. Lots of people believe toothpaste can help them get rid of pimples. However, toothpaste, actually sucks moisture out of your skin, which increases your likelihood of developing pimples.
