The fruits and vegetables supply the body with essential vitamins A, C, E, and K and also minerals that will ensure optimum health of your skin and make it clear of any pimples or zits. These fruits and vegetables also contain antioxidants that will detoxify the body (48, 49).

If you really must do something about your pimple beyond washing your face and spot treating, ice or a cold compress can help reduce swelling. Wrap an ice cube or the compress in a soft tissue or cloth and apply it to your zit for 20-30 seconds at a time, a few times a day. Rosemary oil has been around for years and used topically for acne and inflamed skin. (15) A Chinese study concluded that rosemary essential oil helps decrease acne due to its antibacterial effects. To better understand the effects, the study increased the concentration of the rosemary essential oil, resulting in severely damaged bacterial bodies. Treated bacteria eventually led to bacterial death. (16)

9. I suggest doing masks from the store, like charcole masks, or clay masks, even a baking soda mask. All of these help to reduce redness and minimize the size of breakouts. The charcole mask just completely removes blackheads.

Hmmm the only thing I can think of would be a reaction to (most likely) the cinnamon. Cinnamon can also increase circulation, and bring blood to the surface of the skin, which can result in redness/warmth that shouldn’t last for hours on end.) Otherwise, it’s not unusual for some people to experience discomfort with cinnamon (itchiness, mild “burning”, etc.) in which case it’s best just not to apply it at all. Sometimes I experience itchiness with face masks (of any kind) when left on for any extended amount of time, but it shouldn’t be tormenting. If it’s still bothering you, rinse with plain old water, pat dry, and apply a gentle moisturizer or aloe. Sorry it didn’t work out!

For UVA protection, a sunscreen with a high UVA protection of PA+++ or higher of PA++++ as recommended, especially to treat PIE. PPD is the UVA equivalent of SPF; use a sunscreen with a minimum of PPD20. The PA+ system has a + that corresponds to a tier of PPD protection. Of note, different countries use different PA systems. Japan and Taiwan changed their PA system to a 4+ tier system while Korea uses a 3+ tier system.

Use a retinoid. As a Retinoid is a prescription medication in the U.S., be cautious of the side affects before usage. Retinoid cleansers contain high levels of vitamin A, which help to clean out clogged pores and dissolve away grime. You can get a prescription for one from your doctor. Trademarked OTC retinoid-like products are ineffective.

4. Having acne means you can’t use a moisturizer– Look for a good noncomedogenic (meaning less likely to clog pores) moisturizer to use. After treating your acne, be it with banana peels or over the counter creams, a moisturizer can help balance out your skin, ensuring that it doesn’t create excess oil to compensate for all that you dried up.

Ice pick scars come from comedones, which are caused by sebum and dirt that are buried into your skin. The skin becomes inflamed because of the pus and bacteria. It then puts pressure on the tissues and surrounding skin, damaging them and leaving a deep and narrow indentation in that area.5

Unwashed clothing and bedsheets play a direct role in sudden breakouts. Think about it—your skin comes in contact with your clothing and your bed every day. Wash your sheets at least once a week with a gentle skin-friendly detergent without any artificial colors or fragrance added. Washing your sheets will rid them of dead skin cells, sebum, dirt and debris. Pay special attention to clothing you wear often that build dirt and debris. If you notice acne breakouts on your mid-back, for example, you may need to wash your bra.

You know when you’re getting a pimple even before you see it. “When a pimple is under your skin, you can feel pain if you push on the area. That’s when the bacteria is starting to irritate,” explains Dr. Lee. As the spot gets redder and rises to the surface to become a pustule (aka a pimple that looks “squeezable”) your body is recruiting white cells in order to fight it off. “Your body is pushing out the pimple,” she says.
