Another contributing cause of many cases of acne is bacteria and the bad news is most phones—which most of us are essentially tethered to like an umbilical cord—are teeming with it. According to a 2011 study from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 92 percent of cell phones carry type of bacteria. Dr. Birchall explains that when that bacteria is then repeatedly pressed against the face during phone calls, acne can get exacerbated. The same is also true for pillow cases that rarely see the washing machine or dirty makeup brushes. Thankfully, combatting that is simple enough: He suggests regularly cleaning anything the face contacts. These are everyday items you should be washing a lot more often.
“Beyond that, virtually everything else for acne is prescription. For women who get a flare up before their period, for instance, hormonal treatment can be useful — and that can be the contraceptive pill or otherwise — and finally there is Roaccutane.
If your skin is very oily, then there’s no better option than exfoliating it. You do it to remove any dead skin cells that may be residing on the dermis, doing nothing but to abet bacterial growth and clog the skin pores. There are a variety of ways to exfoliate your skin, but I’ll outline the best and the simplest ones.
With millions of people affected by acne every year, the American Academy of Dermatology reports acne is the most prevalent skin condition in the United States—with many sufferers who are well past puberty. For those battling regular breakouts, studies show acne isn’t purely a cosmetic issue, but can also contribute to poor self-esteem or depression. “As an adult, there is no such thing as mild acne,” says Doris Day, MD, of Day Dermatology and Aesthetics. “Every pimple is an insult and lasts too long.” (Here are sneaky reasons you’re having an acne breakout.) Fortunately, between classic methods and continually emerging dermatological technology, it is possible to achieve clear skin.
The acidic property of apple cider vinegar helps lighten pigmentation in the skin, thus reducing the appearance of acne scars. It also stimulates collagen production, repairs cells and removes dead skin cells.
“That’s something people often underestimate,” Sinclair said. “It takes four to five days for a pimple to fully form and then another four to five days for it to fully go away. It’s not as quick as people think.”
Try essential oils. In addition to tea tree oil, other essential oils have been used in natural acne remedies. Many essential oils have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that make them helpful in clearing up acne quickly. Mix a few drops of the essential oil with a carrier oil like olive oil or jojoba oil before placing it on your skin. Try dabbing any of the following oils on your acne:
There are a number of mild chemical peels available over the counter, but acne scar removal requires a stronger peel typically administered by a doctor or dermatologist. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are slightly stronger than alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peels and may be used for acne scar treatment. The strongest type, phenol peels, may cause significant swelling and require up to two weeks of recovery time at home. Neither are recommended for people with active severe acne.
Relax your body and mind. High stress levels lead to increased sebum production, so do your mind and your skin a favor by giving yourself some time to relax. Try taking a relaxing bath, reading a book, meditating, or practicing yoga and watch your skin transform in response.
If you have a pimple that just won’t go away, break open a capsule of vitamin E (or buy some vitamin E oil) and rub it on your blemish. You can leave it on for 10 minutes or overnight, but the vitamin will keep the area moisturized while reducing any redness and irritation (which is exactly what you’re looking for). It can also help unclog pores and prevent breakouts if you use it on a regular basis.
This Art Natural Organic Oil is a multi-tasker. Its strong ingredients list includes Vitamin E that helps to clear deep-pores. This oil can be gently massaged to moisturize the skin, nails, hairs, and works great on kids as well.
Tea tree oil is an antibacterial agent that can help clear out the microbes clogging your skin. Avoid using undiluted tea tree oil — it’ll burn your skin, and worsen acne. Read the warning label on the bottle.

If you have darker skin, that brown mark is going to be there for about six months before it starts lightening up. But we know you want it to go away faster. Dr. Bowe suggests using an at-home product with glycolic or salicylic acid to exfoliate the skin and help bring those dark skin cells to the surface. Or you can go to a dermatologist and get a glycolic acid peel to lighten up the dark spots.

Harvard shared information regarding isotretinoin, noting that even though the drug shows dramatic results in a short period of time, it’s been shown to “destroy lives.” In fact, Harvard reported that about 25 percent of babies who have been exposed to Accutane while in the womb have serious deformities and develop learning disabilities. Keep in mind with microdermabrasion, you won’ be able to treat very deep acne scars. If you suffer from severe acne scarring, lasers or deep chemical peeling would be more suited to get a more drastic resurfacing treatment (with longer downtime and higher risks though).
