To use this method, combine a bit of water and a few teaspoons of baking soda and mix until it becomes a paste. Massage it onto your face for one to two minutes and keep it there for a few more before washing it out. Don’t forget to apply moisturizer after because baking soda can make your skin dry.9

Baldwin says squeezing is the best way to get rid of blackheads, but should be left to a professional if possible. “A good cosmetologist can do an awesome facial,” she says. “Pore strips can also help. But both of these are made much easier by starting on a retinoid first. Prescription retinoids soften the pore contents and make the whole process more successful and less painful. With time they will also eradicate the blackheads.” The best way to get rid of blackheads for good is with a skin care regimen and the best acne products for clearing the pores. Do not try to pop blackheads or dislodge the blockage with your nails, as your hands may introduce new bacteria to the pores. If you have cystic pimples, Dr. MacGregor recommends calling your dermatologist and popping into the office for a quick visit to receive a cortisone injection (a steroid medication). The shot will reduce inflammation drastically, thus lowering the chance of scarring or of you being tempted to pop the pimple and create a deeper mark.
In the meantime, unless you have a will of steel and avoid touching/rubbing/picking/applying every lotion under the sun, you run the risk of making it even worse. (And yes, that includes putting toothpaste on before bed.)

Hi Claire, I have been having problems with un-controlable acne, usually my face doesn’t break out this bad as it has been doing for the last few weeks, I need some help, I read your article on 22 remedies for clearing up acne/ blemishes. It was helpful!! But do you have any remedies for if I am going to bed? Do you think olive oil would work? Should i just rub that into my face then go to sleep? I also have a problem with picking at/ popping my pimples. I can’t help it though, I want my blemishes to whine down for awhile. My peers at school always talk about how “jacked” up my face is (referring to my blemishes/acne) do you have any advice for keeping myself under-control form touching and picking at my acne? I left my mom’s email so you can get back to me if i’m not around, P.S You sound like an INSPIRING soul! 🙂 Sanaa 11 yrs. old M.O
