Some acne marks and scars are completely within your control while others are pre-determined. Aside from genetics, there are several lifestyle habits that can make dark marks and scars worse. “Sun exposure can supercharge melanocytes, or pigment-producing cells, causing marks and scars to darken.” And, to reiterate one last time, picking or squeezing pimples creates further inflammation and can ultimately lead to more damage, Dr. Woolery-Lloyd and Dr. Bowe both warn.

If the skin on your butt is rough, don’t forget about exfoliating. Use body scrubs but remember to moisturize afterwards. Over-exfoliating can actually cause acne to get worse, which is the opposite of what you want (of course).

No one is sure what causes acne in the first place. Theories range from an excess in hormones causing enlarged oil glands to genetic predisposition or certain skin products. Medications such as contraceptives, lithium (for mental disorders) and steroids may cause acne.

In one study, varying concentrations of aloe vera gel were added to clove-basil oil lotion and evaluated for anti-acne properties. The higher the concentration of aloe vera in the lotion, the more effective it was at reducing pimples (20).

The antioxidants present in green tea cleanse the body of free radicals and other toxins. It also regulates the hormonal balance in the body. All of these reflect on the outer skin, making it clear and acne-free (45). This home remedy is excellent for hormonal acne that is seen on the cheeks, forehead, chin, and neck usually.

Your skin acts as an excretory system to eliminate substances that don’t agree with your body. Dairy is a mucous-forming food that can be difficult for the body digest—which is why many people are lactose intolerant. When you ingest more dairy than your body can digest, it can be excreted through cystic acne (hard, painful bumps under the skin) on the chin and jawline. Try cutting out all forms of dairy (yogurt, milk and all cheeses) for three weeks to see if any new breakouts appear. If not, this may be the cause.

I not only get folliculitis on my butt, it also occurs on the back of my upper legs. Its so frustrating and embarrassing, it occurs more often when I begin to exercise; i rush home from the gym to shower and change but no luck. The only product that has worked for me is “butt acne clearing lotion” by Green Heart Labs. It has Lactic Acid one of the medication the article recommends. I say give it a try, just remember with any skin product it takes time to work – don’t expect results over night. Good Luck everyone.

The Body Shop offers a soap-free body wash gentle enough to use on the whole body, with antibacterial tea tree oil for acne treatment. If you’ve wondered how to get rid of blackheads on your back, where they can be especially stubborn, give this affordable back acne treatment a try.

Sneaky every day habits could secretly be doing a number on your skin. Even something as seemingly harmless as wearing over-the-ear headphones could be the culprit to breakouts around your temples and jawline. “This is especially the case when you wear them during and after a workout, or if you keep them on for long periods of time. Sweat and moisture collect on and around the headphones, compressing the skin and therefore encouraging bacteria and yeast to multiply,” says dermatologist and Simple advisory board member, Dr. Debra Luftman. Gross, but true. Use an anti-bacterial wipe to quickly disinfect your headphones.

Cinnamon and honey can potentially create a powerful acne-fighter when applied to the chest. Cinnamon has antimicrobial capabilities, and raw honey can work as a bacteria-fighting agent. Together, these can reduce bacteria and inflammation that lead to acne. These are safe to use weekly or as needed for new blemishes.

Pop your pimple with an extraction tool. Use a sterile pimple extraction tool (most look like small metal nooses) to empty your pores. Disinfect the pimple and the surrounding area using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Place the round end of the tool over your pimple and drag it slowly across your skin using firm, consistent pressure.[2]

Luckily, there’s a dermatologist who’s garnered quite the acne-obsessed cult Sandra Lee, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Southern California—aka Dr. Pimple Popper. Her YouTube channel is crazy popular, recently logging its billionth view. In her videos, not only does she educate people on what acne is, but she features footage of all sorts of skin issues erupting, including blackheads, pustules, cysts, and more. (There’s a “graphic and shocking” warning that precedes her videos—fair warning!)

Blackheads are a mild form of acne that appear as unsightly, open pores that appear darker than the skin surrounding them. They get their dark appearance from a skin pigment called melanin, which oxidizes and turns black when it’s exposed to the air. Blackheads aren’t caused by dirt, but by sebum (oil) and dead skin cells blocking the pore. If the pore remains open, it becomes a blackhead; if it’s completely blocked and closed, it turns into a whitehead.

Habitually adopting these simple tips in your daily routine, in itself, can provide noticeable improvement in your acne condition. And when combined with the methods we’re going to discuss below, it will definitely provide a perfect platform for the elimination of acne on your neck.

If you have body acne, taking a shower as soon as possible after working out is also key. It turns out that standing around in tight, sweaty workout clothes puts you at greatest risk for body acne and rashes. “The whole idea is that the bacteria that live on the skin can get trapped in the hair follicles and cause inflammation,” says dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Hale. “The more you work out in the heat the more likely this is.” So, make sure to shower (or, at the very least, change out of your sweaty clothes) right after working out.

If you try everything and your pimples still won’t go away, you might want to see a dermatologist to make sure there isn’t a bigger issue. No it won’t. Frequently washing your face with soap can actually dry it out. Dry skin is susceptible to wounds and sensitivity. You can wash your face twice a day if you have normal skin. Acne scars can take a while to disappear completely. Make sure you exfoliate your skin regularly using a face scrub. Use aloe vera gel as a moisturizer and apply tree tea oil on the scars. Aloe vera makes your skin smooth and tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic that heals acne scars. You can also try using mud masks or charcoal peel-off face masks.

The American Academy of Dermatology states that it’s important to treat acne, even though you may often hear that you need to let it “run its course.” The problem with that is that dark spots and permanent scars can develop on the skin. Additionally, clear skin can positively affect one’s self esteem.

“There comes a time in a young woman’s life when breakouts start to become few and far between,” Renée says about what sounds like a very lovely stage of life. “Yet many people make the mistake of continuing to use a skin care routine carried over from their teen years thinking that if they stop using that routine, their blemishes will all come back.” But that’s the wrong way to think about it! If your skin changes, so too should your products. The acne leftovers are probably too strong and drying, especially if it’s time to start thinking about incorporating some preventative anti-aging products into the rotation.

  1. The doctor will cleanse the skin on the face before he introduces the TCA. He or she’ll then use an instrument with a blunt tip (commonly a sterile tooth pick) to get a tiny amount of TCA and then apply it to the base of each scar. Once frosting (white substance) on top of the scars appears, the instrument is removed. The doctor will then repeat the steps to the rest of the scars and then cleanse the skin again once all the scars have been treated with TCA.
The best way to determine the best treatment for the kinds of acne scars you have is to go to a doctor and have your skin condition checked. A great skin doctor will be more than willing to guide you through your post-acne scar-self with careful assessment and expert counseling.
